A police officer in Tennessee is in critical condition after a crash with a state trooper during Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade on Friday.
The crash involved a Maryville police officer on a motorcycle and a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper in an SUV. Both vehicles were providing a “dignitary protection detail escort” in Maryville for the vice president, according to the city.
The Maryville police officer was identified on Saturday as Justin Brown. He was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition with “significant injuries” after undergoing surgery Saturday morning.
Maryville police Chief Tony Crisp said a “group of citizens” at the scene immediately administered first aid to Brown, playing a “critical role” in saving his life.
“To those individuals whose quick response saved FTO Brown’s life last night, we could never thank you enough. You are true heroes,” Crisp said.
He also acknowledged the prayers received since the crash, extending thanks to all who have shown support for Brown and the department.
“We are grateful for each and every one and appreciate the prayers and support from all over the state,” Crisp said. “Our hearts and prayers also go out to the trooper involved in the crash.”
The trooper, who has not been identified, was also transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating.
“The incident took place during an executive protection mission involving multiple law enforcement agencies,” the agency said in a statement.
Vance was in east Tennessee for a private fundraising event Friday evening, WBIR reported.
